How to restore a more youthful look to the bust

Loss of volume from the breasts is a common legacy of motherhood and breastfeeding, as the distension of the breasts with milk causes the skin to stretch.

With the subsequent shrinking, the unsupported breasts settle into the stretched skin and gravity pulls them down.

Putting on weight and then losing it can have the same effect. So too does the ageing process. This common phenomenon can however be dealt with by a simple operation performed by a cosmetic plastic surgeon.

Aurora Clinics Surgical Director Adrian Richards MBBS, MSc, FRCS(Plast) is frequently asked to undertake this procedure called Mastopexy. He explains that this breast uplift operation involves reshaping the breasts to give a firmer, more youthful-looking bust line.

However, he is also clear to stress what the procedure can’t do: a breast uplift will not affect the size of the breasts.

During a Mastopexy, which involves a one to two-hour operation under general anaesthetic, Mr Richards removes some of the skin underneath the breast and moves the nipple to a higher position to create a firmer shape and more ‘pert’ profile.

A breast uplift operation is generally regarded as a permanent solution but depending on the patient’’s age at the time, they may experience some minor drooping in the future.
