A study reported in the International Journal of Surgical Reconstructions has offered a new insight in to the PIP implant scandal – revealing that the instances of rupture may be greater than government reports would have led us to believe.

The study, which was conducted by Spire Murray Hospital in Edinburgh, reveals findings that indicate the problem was far greater than initial reports found.

Furthermore, they also highlight a marked difference in ruptures between PIP implants that were implanted before 2003 and those which were implanted afterwards. 2003 is believed to be the year that industrial-grade silicone was first used by the French company responsible for manufacturing them.

The study consisted of examining patient records, surgical findings and investigations. Between the period of 1999 and 2007, 429 patients were called for recall for their PIP implants at the Edinburgh hospital and were offered a full consultation, USS scan and explantation, if they desired it. Of the 429, 338 patients came back for a recall with surprising results.

2003 – a turning point for PIPs?

Almost 40% of patients who received PIP implants after 2003 were revealed to have ruptured implants, compared to just over 21% of those who had the implants before 2003. This was despite having older implants, when ruptures may be expected to become more commonplace. This is at odds with official government figures released last year.

Initially, the UK regulator, the Medicine and Healthcare products Regulator Agency (MHRA) advised a rupture rate of 1%. This did increase however when they admitted that the rupture rate for PIP implants was greater than the industry average, at 6-12% after 5 years, rising to between 15 and 30% between 6 and 12 years.

At Aurora the instances of rupture rates for PIP implants has been lower than the recorded findings of this study.

South Korea is well known for its love of plastic surgery, having as it does the highest rate per capita. Surgeries that enjoy the most popularity include rhinoplasties (nose jobs) and also eyelid surgery – often, it’s believed, to give the eye a more Westernised look by removing hooded lids.

The latest craze though now includes something far more invasive – jaw realignment surgery. Once the preserve of the dentist, when serious dental flaws and subsequent disfigurement was apparent, it has now shifted across to the cosmetic arena.

The step towards the cosmetic industry was made by a dental clinic in Seoul around four years ago, where the potential for it to make jaws more delicate and feminine (it’s almost solely targeted at and carried out on women) was picked up on.

Since then plastic surgeons and dentists alike have been offering it in their droves on a cosmetic basis. In Seoul in particular adverts abound for the surgery, including before and after photos on billboards. The procedure has not been without its critics however with some expressing concern over the serious nature of the operation in relation to the perceived lack of seriousness in its cause – vanity.

A professor of dentistry at Seoul University, Choi Jin-young, comments:

“This surgery alters your look far more dramatically than, say, Botox or a nose job because it changes your entire facial bone structure. It’s a very complex, potentially dangerous surgery.

“It’s disturbing to see people with no real dental flaws daring to go through it just to have a small, pretty face.”

The procedure, which includes cutting away bone before re-setting the jaw bones together again, involves general anaesthetic and can take months to recover from. Despite that it is often touted by celebrities who are sometimes hired by doctors to extol the virtues of the procedure in order to boost sales. This, alongside decreasing costs for the surgery and extensive advertising, has seen it rise in number over the last four years.

One doctor defends it however, referring to the huge emphasis that South Koreans place on beauty, especially in women:

“Yes, it was originally invented to correct a dental deformity, but you can’t blame someone for getting the surgery to look good, especially in a place like the South where beauty, especially for women, pretty much trumps it all.”

A move by a group of UK plastic surgery clinics to improve the reputation of plastic surgery through more honest advertising is being blocked by magazines.

The adverts used images of realistically sized women and were distributed to several online magazines. They featured a selection of photographs with close up images of women sporting problem areas such as bingo wings, a ‘muffin’ top and flabby stomachs. However they were rejected by advertisers for not looking perfect enough.

The clinic made the decision as a proactive reaction to Sir Bruce Keogh’s Plastic Surgery Review, which calls for a number of regulatory measures to ensure that the industry conducts itself ethically. They believed the images represent an honest view of why women may seek surgery. Their message is unlikely to get across if advertisers stand in their way.

Rather than accept the images, the magazines requested new ones with models who were thinner, more tanned and sporting bikinis.

In response the clinic released the following statement:

“We are trying to respond to the Sir Bruce Keogh Review by using real women with real problems in our promotions rather than celebrity patients but it seems that the publishers cannot move away from the images of Victoria’s Secret-esque bikini models.

“What the magazines objected to was posting pictures of models with real problem areas.”

We also support the realistic representation of women and in improving regulation and reputation within the aesthetic medical industry.

Proving the younger generation have fewer qualms over sharing their plastic surgery stories, American child star Amanda Bynes admitted her own rhinoplasty in the most thoroughly modern way – via Twitter.

The actress, now 27, decided to publicise her nose job so that the media would use recent photographs instead of older ones as she feels she looks so much better now. She said:

“I wasn’t going to tell anyone, but I look so much prettier in my new photos that I don’t want old photos used anymore!

“I’m so sick of magazines and blogs using old photos! When will they stop? I will never look like that again!”

Rather than changing the shape or size of her nose the reason for her visit to the plastic surgeon was actually to remove webbed skin between the top of her nose and her eyes:

“I had a nose job to remove skin that was like a webbing in between my eyes. Having surgery was the most amazing thing for my confidence.”

Despite this there have been reports that those close to her have been worried about the star’s well-being, following erratic behaviour that included shaving half her head and posting almost nude photos of herself online. She was even estranged from her parents for a period although they are said to be patching things up and are now communicating again.

Currently working as an actress and fashion designer, Bynes rose to fame as a child actress in the mid 1990s, starring in shows such as All That and The Amanda Show.

The gene makes hereditary breast and ovarian cancer significantly more likely, and as her own mother passed away following a 10-year battle with ovarian cancer, Jolie decided to reduce the risk of getting the disease herself through pre-emptive surgery. According to doctors she had an 87% chance of getting breast cancer at some point and a 50% chance of ovarian cancer.

Writing her first person piece in The New York Times’ Op-Ed section, the actress says of her decision:

“Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex.”

Jolie continued in this vein of honesty by going in to some detail over the surgery particulars and follow up breast reconstruction, including her “nipple delay” – a surgical process designed to increase the likelihood of keeping the nipples. She went on to describe the process, including “brain tubes and expanders” but also the new implants, the result of which she says can be “beautiful”.

It’s a process she began in February and Jolie has written her article with the express aim of highlighting what genetic testing can offer for women, as well as hoping to diminish taboo on the subject of mastectomies. Intending to bolster women who face a similar predicament she explains how the operations have left her feeling no less feminine, rather, in fact that she has felt “empowered through making a strong choice”.

Although she is not the first star to make a double mastectomy public she has been praised across the media for making this step, including The Guardian’s Hadley Freeman who called her decision “extraordinary”.

Support has also come from closer to home, including husband Brad Pitt who openly praised his partner’s “heroic decision”.

An American plastic surgery clinic’s office manager has been charged with practicing medicine without a proper licence. Christine Patterson, sister of one of the clinic’s surgeons, assumed the role of after care provider that should instead have been taken by a qualified professional.

The patient at the receiving end of the illegal treatment had undergone a mini facelift by Dr Alberico Sessa on April 2013, 2011. She returned to the clinic the following day to have her face checked over. According to the affidavit’s records Dr Sessa was out away from the clinic that day, and Patterson instead removed the patient’s bandages, checked the face and then re-bandaged it.

The day after that the patient reportedly suffered from swelling of the face that grew to the size of a “pumpkin” according to the affidavit. Dr Sessa was out of the clinic on this day too so his sister, Ms Patterson, contacted him by phone to explain the problem and then diagnosed the patient as suffering from a hematoma (a localised collection of blood outside the blood vessels, usually as liquid form within soft tissue).

She then proceeded, despite not being medically qualified, to treat the patient. This involved inserting a drain to the back of her ear and removing the excess liquid that way. No pain relief was offered to the patient.

Dr Sessa insists he has no recollection of being away from the clinic that day and that he sees all of his plastic surgery patients following surgery. Patterson’s own response to the charge was that she had seen the procedure done “plenty of times”.

She is currently serving bail and has been prohibited from speaking to any of the clinic’s other patients.

There’s a new reality TV series on our screens and this time the girls are brasher, there’s even more nudity and they get even more dressed up than those in The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) and Newcastle’s Geordie Shore.

The Valleys is a reality show that brings young men and women from the Welsh valleys to live it up in Cardiff – and essentially offers viewing of the ensuing mayhem that bringing a group of single early twenty-somethings in a mood for mischief and partying brings. Great fun or car-crash TV, depending on your view of it…

What the show also reveals is young girls’ continuing love affair with surgical breast enhancement, seemingly sticking to the trend already mapped out by other UK reality stars.

Heat magazine interviewed three of the starring young women this month, two of which are seen to be sporting impressive (and enhanced) cup sizes. One of which, Jenna, a trainee solicitor, received hers for her 18th birthday. The girl without implants, Nicole, bemoans her chest size to the magazine:

“No one will ever see my boobs as I haven’t got any.”

Before continuing about feeling self-conscious on TV:

“I want a boob job ten times more now. That’s my dream. Since I was born, I’ve always wanted a boob job.”

Despite their mutual love of surgical enhancements that didn’t stop the girls having a dig and at fellow reality TV star Amy Childs, with Lateysha Grace, 20, comparing her to Pete Burns.

Geordie Shore star Holly Hagan has revealed the reason behind her latest boob job to Now magazine, citing weight loss and the resulting impact it had on her original implants.

The reality star, now 21, had her first boob job at 18. Since then she has lost two stone in weight and the result of that for her breasts was not what she was anticipating. Because of the excess skin around the breast area her implants became looser and she could move them around.

Discussing the effect it had, she told the gossip mag:

“A year and a half ago I noticed they were suddenly looking really saggy and in completely the wrong place. My nipples were pointing to the floor. I had the boobs of a 90-year-old woman – I’ve seen grannies with better boobs than I had!

“I was disgusted. I never took my bra off. My boobs looked like udders and I could grab the implant with my fingers.”

She continued to tell the magazine how it made her lose her confidence with men. Once they got to the stage where they may have to see each other undressed she would worry that her breasts would not match up to their expectations, indicating that they looked fine under clothing.

Her latest boob job has taken her up to a size 32FF.
