Do I need Replacement Breast Implants or a Breast Capsulectomy?

Your Questions Answered by the Surgeons at Aurora ClinicsQuestion:

Since having breast enlargement surgery 25 years ago, my breast implants have gradually become harder and harder and are sometimes quite uncomfortable, they are also too large for my liking.

Could you tell me if it is possible to have my breast implants replaced with smaller implants or am I forever stuck with the size that they are now?

Answer:

Thank you very much for your enquiry. It sounds as though both of your breasts have become encapsulated by scar tissue. This is a condition called Capsular Contracture. This can rarely occur with implants which have been in place for a long time. They go hard and in some cases become quite uncomfortable.

In answer to your question, we can confirm that it is possible to remove your current breast implants along with their surrounding capsules of tissue. This operation is known as breast capsulectomy.

At the same time it would be possible to insert smaller implants. However, this may require a skin tightening procedure such an uplift to eliminate any stretched skin.
