This is a video of implant removal and replacement where one of the implants had split. We begin already with the procedure underway. Mr Richards is cutting into the breast to remove the implant. As the pocket is opened, we see the customary creamy fluid we only ever see around PIP implants. We also know because of this creamy fluid that the implant is 100% ruptured. Mr Richards squeezes the breast to drain all the fluid out of the breast, before cleaning it out and inserting the fresh implant. The fluid sourced from the ruptured PIP is collected in a small container and sent off to Italy for analysis.
As the implant is removed we see a huge split right across the shell through one side. It is almost in two pieces, but the gel has kept its form very well, which is something we have seen on other PIP implants we have removed. The shell and the silicone are both below par as the shell shouldn’t rupture, and the silicone shouldn’t produce the white creamy fluid we see. The silicone however has kept its shape, but that is something that should happen anyway. We don’t offer any brownie points for one thing acting as it should when two other elements are horrifically below par. The patient had inflammation and swelling in the side where her implant was ruptured, which we believe will subside almost immediately now she has had them replaced.
